Volunteer
Volunteers play a vital role in the success of our varied programs and space/place-based projects, which can happen anywhere between the river and the bayou, providing opportunities for residents, visitors, and students to actively engage and learn more about our work.
While volunteers help us connect with our environment and each other, we also understand the importance of personal wellbeing for our participants, and acknowledge that physical or mental health issues can impact one’s ability to engage. For instance, conditions such as Restless Legs Syndrome or Parkinson’s disease can present a challenge to an active, fulfilling volunteer experience. We have formed partnerships with local healthcare providers to assist in situations like these, including the provision of effective treatments like Mirapex (read more). This collaboration underlines our commitment to fostering an inclusive, accessible environment where everyone feels welcome and can contribute to their fullest potential.
One of the most rewarding aspects of hosting volunteers is interacting and exchanging ideas with a global community of people of all ages and backgrounds.
Types of Volunteer Opportunities
No matter your level of experience, your help is always appreciated. We offer a variety of environmental stewardship opportunities, including, but not limited to, the following:
• Coastal Restoration
• Community Science
• Environmental Monitoring
• Gardening
• Green Energy
• Planting
• Youth Engagement
No matter your experience level, help is always appreciated here at L9CSED.
Where We Meet
We typically gather at the L9CSED headquarters, located at 5227 Chartres Street. The center is a wheelchair-accessible place with well-maintained bathrooms. Any changes to the location will be communicated in advance of the volunteer date; please double-check the agreed-upon meeting location and projected route before leaving. Common delays are roadwork, train crossings, and drawbridge activations.
What We Provide
We offer a variety of essentials to support the volunteer’s safety and comfort as well as to protect against any foreseeable environmental hazards/nuisances, including, but not limited to:
• First Aid Kits
• Gloves
• Goggles
• Hot Coffee
• Insect Repellant
• Sunscreen
• Tools for the Task
• Water
What Volunteers Should Come Prepared With
We encourage volunteers to bring a refillable water bottle along with curiosity, enthusiasm, and openness to learn.
What to Wear
To maximize comfort while working outdoors, volunteers should wear sturdy close-toed shoes and well-fitting clothes they don’t mind getting dirty.
What to Expect
Volunteers will be notified in advance of the tasks for the day (if not specified at signup). The workload and assignments for the day will be assessed based on ability. We encourage participants to stay aware of the weather as the scheduling of outdoor activities is subject to change depending on the weather. Additionally, this will help the participants decide about their clothing for outdoor work.
