Lower 9th Ward Neighbors harvest watermelon, rosemary, and mint at the CSED Dauphine Community Garden at 4819 Dauphine Street. Stop by often to gather whatever is growing or contact Kathy Muse, CSED Program Coordinator, for more information at 504-939-9028. This garden is a blight beautification project of the Lower 9th Ward CSED.
Today we remember how our lives and community were forever changed nine years ago. We also celebrate the resilience of our community and the progress we've made nine years later.
CVS Pharmacy is set to open a new store next year in the 5000 block of N. Claiborne Ave. This would be the first major retailer to open a store in our community since Hurricane Katrina.
This week we welcomed the American Baptist Home Mission Societies volunteers back to our Lower 9th Ward community with a backyard BBQ. Since 2007, this group of volunteers has been traveling from many states across the country to help CSED rebuild our Lower 9th Ward community. We can't thank them enough for their continued support.
There will be a public hearing Tuesday, Aug. 26, at 1:30 p.m. for the CSED Center located at 5227 Chartres Street. The meeting will take place in the City Council Chamber (Room 1E07), City Hall, 1300 Perdido Street. We welcome all of our neighbors to come out and show support.
CSED is inviting all of our neighbors to a special meeting regarding the zoning of our vacant lots at 2639 Caffin Ave., 5620 Florida Ave., 2636 Lamanche St., and 2640 Lamanche Street. The meeting will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, at 2636 Lamanche St.
Thank you to everyone who attended our special meeting to highlight the progress of our CSED Center. With the help of wonderful volunteers it's come quite a long way.
We've made great progress with our new center and we've got exciting plans for the future. We'll be hosting a special meeting for neighbors to check out our new center this Saturday, July 12 at 11 a.m. The center is located in the next block from the CSED office at 5227 Chartres Street.
The U.S. Green Building Council Louisiana, Host Chapter for the 2014 Greenbuild International Conference & Expo (Greenbuild), has selected The CSED Center: A Sustainable Historic House as the site of the 2014 Greenbuild Host City Legacy Project. The project involves renovating CSED's Center at 5227 Chartres, from a 130 yr. old barge board house to an energy efficiency educational center. Construction by experienced volunteers will take place in the Summer and Fall, with an opening ceremony in time for the 2014 Greenbuild International Conference & Expo.
CSED released the third edition of the Lower 9th Ward Resource Guide this week. The guide is a collection of services and businesses in our Lower 9th Ward community. We hope it will increase of everything our neighborhood has to offer.
Please join Holy Cross Neighborhood Association for a short meeting tonight at 5:30 p.m. to discuss plans for the community 4th of July celebration. The meeting will take place at Greater Little Zion Church, 5130 Chartres Street. Immediately afterwards, they'll join District E officials and community leaders, 6 p.m. - 7:15 p.m. at Bethel A.M.E. Church, 1437 Caffin Ave. They'll be discussing the progress made on key issues like the Claiborne bridge, the fire house and the new Martin Luther King Jr. High School. We welcome all community members to attend both meetings.
Our neighbors at Lower 9th Ward Village will be partnering with Supporting Urban Agriculture and Galvez Goodies to host a block party Friday, June 6, 4 p.m. - 7 p.m. and you're invited! It's a party with a purpose, as all proceeds will take them one step closer to opening a grocery store in our Lower 9th Ward neighborhood. There will be a raffle, a dj and crawfish for just $5 a bowl at the event, which will take place at the corner of Galvez and Caffin.
