The Lower Ninth Ward Food Access Coalition is a project of the Lower 9th Ward Center for Sustainable Engagement & Development. The group consists of Lower Ninth Ward community leaders and residents committed to addressing the food access issues of the Lower Ninth Ward, which is considered a “food desert” by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
The Food Access Coalition emerged from the Food Action Planning Initiative. Through this initiative, the Coalition led efforts to create a Lower Ninth Ward Food Action Plan, which includes three food access solutions selected by community participants:
